I love family reunions. And while it’s fun to see and play with my cousins and extended family, I enjoy the conversations of my grandparents and aunts and uncles most. And when my father and his siblings get together, I see a different side of dad. A side that shows him not as an authority figure, but as an equal. Dad was once in my shoes, and I don’t grasp that every day. It takes me out of a comfort zone to realize that he, too, was once a son. And, while I have always looked up to him as a source of advice and guidance, he, too has looked up to his dad in the same way. I’m looking forward to the next family reunion, just so I can see my father in that light again.
